The Glowing Spider-Worms of New Zealand

For over one hundred years, millions of tourists have flocked to the ancient limestone Waitomo Caves on New Zealand’s North Island, where a stunning species of fungus gnat called Arachnocampa luminosa live.

Unique to New Zealand and Australia, they are found in caves, grottoes, and other sheltered places. Arachnocampa means ‘spider-worm,’ as the gnat is known for the way their larvae hang strong vertical silk threads from their underground habitats. Since the larvae are luminescent, the thousands of tiny threads light up cave ceilings like a starry sky.

Nick Wildermuth (website)

I make contemporary still life paintings of objects that can be found in my living space, as well as in my working space at my art studio in San Francisco.  My most recent and ongoing series of paintings have been inspired by the introduction of plants and flowers in my living space.  Incorporated with these plants are the everyday clutter that can be found on my night stands and dressers.

My works are influenced by popular culture often making visual references to books I read, movies I watch, food I eat, products i use, and other artist I like.  My paintings also make several references to works throughout Art History.  I’m interested in pattern making, textures, repetition, color and the different applications of paint (from spray cans to oil and more).  My paintings are bright, fun, humorous but also a little depressing and lonely.
